Why is Swarm code SOOOO hard to compile?
Because it is the result of a history-dependent process, whereby various
clever people have hacked together solutions (sometimes very clever ones)
to problems small and big (up to and including crappy compilers) as they
arose; the resulting bowl of spaghetti is only fit food for wizards or the
foolhardy.
Despite this, Swarm is a great tool with few direct competitors, and it
would make a lot of sense to rewrite the package from scratch, if we had
the resources.
