troff/nroff has a distinct advantage in general, which is that the
same sources cleanly produce plain and formatted text (and now
hypertext -- NetBSD has mdoc macros that generate nice html, and there
are similar hacks in groff).

The problem with troff is it is a bit obscure. :(
