@ comment 31.  Yes it is essential that the markup commands be  
_associative_, so that
  \line { \line { x y } \line { z } }
is the same (regarding visual appearance and metrics) as
  \line { \line { x } \line { y z } }

For example,
  \markup \line {Timpani in\concat {B \flat} \concat{ F } }
  \markup \line {Timpani in\concat {B } \concat{ \flat F } }
  \markup \concat { \line {Sonata in E} \line {\flat major} }
  \markup \concat { \line {Sonata in} \line {E \flat major} }
should have the same appearance.
