Follow-up Comment #32, bug #42534 (project octave):

Success!

I downloaded the Mesa drivers binary (from
http://qt-project.org/wiki/Cross-compiling-Mesa-for-Windows) and placed it
into the bin directory alongside the Octave executables.  Now Octave prints as
it should! 

You might have to set LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE in your MSYS/Windows environment
variables (see http://www.mesa3d.org/envvars.html).
