I'll look into it. I no longer think that an incomplete LaTeX toolchain was the issue (see comment #50). Checking for a working toolchain delays the first plot for me notably even if it doesn't contain any graphics objects that have their "interpreter" property set to "latex". Would it be possible to delay the check for a working toolchain until it is actually needed?
