Follow-up Comment #5, bug #63437 (project octave): I'm attaching a patch that checks if the pointer to the settings object is valid in more places. If it isn't, it uses (hard-coded) defaults. I don't know if the settings pointer *can* be a nullptr in all of those places. But adding the check probably doesn't hurt much either.
