Just to suggest a more convenient way to use efence without having to
reload:

type 'export LD_PRELOAD=libefence.so.0.0' before running Adonthell and
electric fence will be loaded automatically. You should read an electric
fence message at Adonthell's startup.

Beware that it will eat lots of memory and may be quite long to start.
