I checked with top before: there was ~300MB RAM free (but I think that
could  have become more - I only had X and enlightenment running and
back when I only had 256MB RAM they took less, it's like they take a
percentage of the RAM or something!) and 1GB Swap free too.

Maybe you can get someone to try it on a Cray?
