that is only remotely related to the problem I'm having, I think.

If you look at document on build-improvements, you'll see that it has
been augmented to allow finer grains. So your comparison is even more
accurate on build-improvements than on trunk :-).
[ I suspect that implements earlier discussions we have had and the
  improvements reflect what I needed. ]

Based on input from Ralf, I start suspecting mic-macs with the
axiom.sty and friends.
