Although this is inappropriate if the application isn't going to run on the same machine that it's being built on. Requiring git to build it is unnecessary, and doesn't ensure it will be present on the machine when the application is run. Build dependencies should be exactly that.

The number of actual users who are going to build be from source in order to run it on their own machine is small compared to the number of techies who will want to build it from source for one reason or another. Building an Ubuntu package, for example, is done in a minimal chroot environment that then brings in the build dependencies of the package, and git brings in a huge number of dependent packages that aren't used in the build and just slow things down.
