Without doing "what the customer wants" you can simply forget doing
Kickstarters. And nobody said it has to be a short term goal.

Imagine $500'000; you could pay 3 developers 2 years full time. Enough
for a moonshot? Several 3D printer designs reached such numbers with
just a fancy, half baked idea. Prospects of software games reached a lot
more.

Such expectations are the entire reason why crowdfunding works.

Forget it :-) There are plenty of cash registers, cloud managers and
invoicing apps already. The group of possible users is pretty small, for
sure not in the millions. And nobody in the crowdfunding world puts a
dime on things like "quality" or "GNUstep-first".
