Correction, it does. I was under the impression it was returning a plain 
tuple, but it's not. 

Thorsten, can you confirm that the URL (no need to include actual examples) in 
the XML response from the server contains ONLY the hostname (not the 
user:password@ part)?

The attached patch is slightly modified and should fix the error reporting in 
case of mis-matched hostnames, and should also fix the hostname check itself.  
This should hopefully make it work without SSL at least.
