Personally, I think .89 per 4.7GB DVD-R is the way to go. ;-)

For those that are interested, supermediastore.com has DVDPro media at hat
price in a 90-pack. That's *too* many DVD-R's at once for me - especially with
daily price drops - so I split the order with some workmates.

I recently purchased the A04, and I can write data to it just fine.

You should, but I've never tried it with an Apple.

You need scsi-emulation support in your kernel. There is a good deal of
documentation on the Internet for how to do this.

DVD-R/RW drives will not burn DVD-RAM media or DVD+R/RW media.

DVD-R/RW burns 4.7GB, if you want to burn more than that, you need to look to
see what the other writable DVD formats have to offer and at what additional
cost. Personally, I think the $1.50 per 4.7GB DVD-R is the way to go.

Just on general principal you should learn how to build a kernel; personally I
think it is the very first thing a person should learn how to do when using
Linux. That said, whether you will have to rebuild your kernel depends on
what support has been included in the one you're running. You will definately
need scsi emulation support, as mentioned above.

I'm running a Tyan Tiger MP w/ 2x1800+'s, and can burn just fine. I do have to
set some IDE flags on the drive, but it seems that most others don't, so this
may just be something specific to my setup.

There's a ton of information out there on the web, I would strongly suggest
hitting Google, and finding out everything you can.
