I think the poor approach of the interchanging use of the word "burn" to
mean both "[sequential] recording" and "[random access] rewriting," when
the two are completely different, adds to the confusion.

A "summary" for those "new here" ...

"Record" aka "Burn"

  - Sequential
  - Pre-master images (usually ISO9660 filesystem)
  - Uses "SCSI generic" (/dev/sg)
[ "direct" access under Windows ]
  - Uses CDR/DVDRTools

  - DVD-R (Standard) used by Pioneer DVD-R and DVD-RW
          and 3rd gen Panasonic/Toshiba DVD-RAM
  - DVD+R (Independent) used by 2nd gen Sony/Philips/HP DVD+RW

"Rewrite" or "Packet Write"

  - Random Access
  - Created on-the-fly (usually UDF filesystem)
  - Uses "SCSI disk" (/dev/sd)
[ "drive letter" under Windows ]
  - Uses kernel driver and direct filesystem

  - DVD-RAM (Standard, Archive) used by Panasonic/Toshiba DVD-RAM
  - DVD-RW (Standard, Consumer) used by Pioneer DVD-RW
  - DVD+RW (Independent, Consumer) used by Sony/Philips/HP DVD+RW

"#3 UCF -- 'Five Best Non-BCS Teams,' College Football News ...
With Daunte Culpepper and others, UCF put the fear o'death in a
lot of big-time programs in recent seasons ... They might not
have the athletes of the Sunshine State's Big Three, but the
Golden Knights still have athletes, and will be heard from this
season. Watch out JoePa on August 31, bay-bee!"
