I now realize that I should have read etc/DEBUG more carefully before
impatiently starting to go ahead.  I believe I now understand what I
should have done.  Anyway, I will first see whether the crash still
occurs after your latest changes to timer.el and, if so, try to
produce a Lisp backtrace for that one.
