"___" (with any following character) is already a literal underscore and
an accelerator-prefix, so that doesn't work.  You'd have to have "__U" be
a literal underscore and "__A" be an accelerator underscore (leaving all
other "__?" patterns undefined for future expansion).


Given that Gtk+ has had this limitation for years (_ can not be an accelerator) and nobody complained, I don't think it is anything but a theoretical problem. Anybody got a concrete example of an Emacs menu that could have _ as accelerator?
