It is a rather popular choice, yes.

I've seen many people expect this feature automatically, coming from
other editors. I don't use it, personally, so this is one of the
examples where I'd prefer newbies to adapt to change and just look at
the mode-line in the rare instances they really need the line number.

It's rather popular, actually. And IMHO, it's much less annoying and
confusing than the cursor-jumping behavior of blink-matching-paren,
which is enabled by default now.

+1. Whenever the window-handling code does something different from what
I'd expect, winner-mode saves the day.
