I must confess that I use emacs in a terminal (OS X emacs doesn't do X11), so I just drop my images in the publication tree and check them with my browser, I don't see them in emacs at all. I think the best thing to do is fix publication to just copy files in the wiki tree that match emacs-wiki-image-regexp without markup. Please try address@hidden/emacs-wiki--gary--1.0--patch-16.
