Maybe `tab-width' differences make sense, where you are not staying with
the default value ?

And the default value of `tab-width' should be 8 ?

,----[ C-h v tab-width RET ]
| tab-width is a variable defined in `C source code'.
| Its value is 8
|
| Automatically becomes buffer-local when set in any fashion.
|
| This variable is safe as a file local variable if its value
| satisfies the predicate `integerp'.
|
| Documentation:
| *Distance between tab stops (for display of tab characters), in columns.
|
| You can customize this variable.
