That's what I do. But you are missing the point. Those programs (antiword, AbiWord, OOo, etc.) do not depend on non-free software to read .doc files. If they did, they would be in the same position as a free driver requiring non-free firmware to do its job. Meaning, it would be unacceptable to distribute them in such form.
