I fully agree that running the doc build has been worthwhile for some
patches, and will likely continue to be so.

Indeed, no; some errors in Texinfo input are ignored or handled
gracefully by makeinfo/texi2html (in particular they ignore any TeX
code), whereas TeX may barf on them.
