I could conceive of a designer that would do that (solder things to the motherboard) to increase the likelihood of planned obsolescence in a device. But, this is only if the parts that are being used are actually designed that way: and thus cheaply built machines have a higher rate of obsolescence... Hence my hesitation.

My guess would be that this is the most significant evidence so far. Soldering something to the motherboard is good engineering design for a component that is likely to outlast the computer itself, but not for something that is likely to need replacement during its life. The system's designer evidently had more confidence than you.
