hmm top say ml get 30-55% of the cpu.(recover_temp (5 files))
i use redhat7.1(2.4.13) on p1-233/96MBRAM + slow conner ide-hds. 
eh, i played for a while with hdparm to tune the hd's. < your problem?
but 30-55% of cpu is ok for that.
