or use a filesystem without such drawbacks.

ext2 suffers from fragmentation quite big, imho it's one of the worst 
filesystems around (apart from FAT ;) - a unix filesystem shouldn't need
to be defragmented.

Using UFS on BSD I never had such problems, neither on Solaris.
