and i'd bet precious few of those have mh installed.

while i'm sure that's true, i'm curious now where it comes from these
days, or how the user knows to set it.  i expected to find it
defaulted in /etc/profile.d or /etc/skel, but it's in neither place.

the VISUAL vs. EDITOR distinction is a bit anachronistic, these days.
