I would however reinterate my argument that a GNU project should not be
supporting jbig2 (or JPX) encoding. This is a patented format. The risk
for decoder implementations is low, and it is beneficial to be able to
render and convert documents using this filter, but we should not be
encouraging users to create such documents anew.
Our idea is to generate JBIG2 data compressed using Huffman encoding
instead of patented arithmetic encoding. AFAIK it is allowed by the
JBIG2 standard.
But I see your reasoning. The GNU policies clearly say that we should
not encourage the use of patented technologies. We should discuss
this. Would you like to participate in the discussion in a private
thread? Your knowledge of JBIG2 would be quite useful to take a
decision.
