Shared libraries

Can anybody give me any hints on how to produce shared
library versions of all the libraries used in the swarm system.
The only one that seems to have shared-library generation in the
default Makefile is BLT. As it is, the executable files generated,
even for a very simple swarm program, are on the order of 2-3
Megabytes. My OS (SunOS) doesn't like executing programs this big,
and the only way I can run some of them is to use the debugger (gdb).
Is there a reason why shared libraries are not the default?
