The only procedure that is guaranteed to work is to configure with
the compiler that you intend to use to build applications.
I used gcc 2.7.2.3 to build the .deb Swarm package on the `slink' release
of Debian.
>From the fact you say that Objective C is not packaged with your gcc
2.7.2.3 and reviewing the various Contents-i386.gz files, am I correct
to infer that you are using the alpha `potato' version of Debian?
