I have just compiled NeuroLib on my SGI IRIX 6.5 with no problems. When
I configured Swarm I used:

./configure --with-xpmlibdir=/usr/lib32 ... and some more stuff ...

which made ${swarmhome}/etc/swarm/Makefile.common contain the line:
xpmlibdir = /usr/lib32

Perhaps that is your problem?
