Ok, in summary:

  1. R-0.63.3 is good to have around to reports bugs in R, since it is
     an official release.

  2. R-devel-sfi-1999-02-09 is what we have on our FTP site, and the
version used for the Debian and Solaris binary packages
distributed from SFI. The copy we distribute will be updated to
the current snapshot of R-devel at the time of the next Swarm
binary release, or will be eliminated if there is a new official
release of R at that time.

  3. R-devel from CRAN now contains #2.

#2 and #3 have better HDF5 support relative to R-0.63.3.
The main improvement is support for dataframes. Dataframes are
a handy way to read typed data from a text file.
