The problem is not your version of Java but the version of your book.
Its just too old. 

JApplet (and the entire swing package) was moved from com.sun.java to
javax.swing more than a year ago (maybe two even). I'd suggest getting a
new book. You can fix your problem by replacing com.sun.java.swing with
javax.swing however.
