Follow-up Comment #6, bug #43063 (project octave):

Yeah, that certainly seems similar.  However, I think the problem ultimately
resides with gnulib and/or octave.  It's perfectly reasonable/legal for
suitesparse to include <math.h> inside of an extern "C" block, even if not
strictly necessary. 

However, I've sent an email to the suitesparse author and applied the
suitesparse patch to the Fedora package.

Messing with include order may not help: the system math.h uses "_MATH_H" for
the include guard, while gnulib uses "_GL_MATH_H".
