I'm told there are more than spelling differences--happily, program
messages aren't that often affected :)

Note, there is at least one package requiring en_US.po (gettext); Bruno
refuses to obey American spelling rules ;)

Yes, German has it's rough edged, too:
. New spellings aren't accepted everywhere (publishers, newspapers,
writers (like Günther Grass) refuse to use it).
. Daily usage differs from written texts.
. And, yes, there are serious regional differences: I once submitted
de_AT for texinfo on account of the translation of "january":
de_AT: Jänner
de : Januar
In hello/contrib I've two Franconian translations
(de_franconian_po.txt) ;-)
I fear I cannot help that much with the Croatian matters; modulo bugs
and omissions I do consider the ISO 639 list coming with the gettext
manual as mandatory for the Translation Project.
