The versions of gnuclient that I use work fine when installed in the
same directory as emacs.exe.

*Any* stand-alone machine should have a personal firewall active these
days.  The latest XP update even includes one as part of the OS.

I don't know the details, I have never programmed or actively
researched mailslots.

But I doubt that local mailslots use IP.  If I remember the history
right, mailslots where introduced long before IP could be treated as a
given.  When mailslots work between separate machines, they are
probably bridged by some protocol proxy module.

Anyway, I wasn't advocating any particular implementation, I just
thought that whoever wants to provide an implementation at any level
should keep this issue in mind.
