No, but:

Plus-options are "non-standard" from several perspectives and, from
several perspectives, for very good reasons.  So minimizing the
consequences of the misfeature would seem to be a good idea.

How about we relegate vi to the status of an "slightly irregular
verb", removing it from the status of "a reason to press authors
writing in english to never use the letter `x' at the beginning of an
noun phrase which is the object of a sentence."

The Emacs approach that was mentioned, treating '+' specially only
when followed by digits, would seem to be portable to vi-family
editors and would largely resolve the problem.
