Lin, I think I got it, finally. In the "Create by hand" table you're
expected to write the vertices into two separate columns, i.e. one
below 'from' and the other below 'to', without any commas, like this:

from    |    to
------------------
0         |    1
1         |    2
...

or you can use symbolic names here as well, e.g.

from     |    to
--------------------
Alice    |    Bob
Bob      |    Cecil
....

just remember not to separate the vertices by commas or anything, and
type them into distinct cells.
Here is another example (the columns have different names, but the
principle is the same):

Does this solve your problem?

Thanks for the report, igraph should not crash anyway, no matter what
you type into the cells, so this is definitely a bug, and at least
I've updated the socnet.R script to the new igraph version.
