Also, does "git status" report any untracked files?  Stuff like
Documentation/user/ should be gone now.

There's also "make distclean", which is supposed to be "cleaner
than clean", but IIRC that doesn't remove the stuff done by
doc-clean.

In this case, I think it's worth it.  After MAKING SURE that
you've moved any of your recent work out of that directory.
