I don't like it, because the real duration is not visible anymore, because it depends on some hidden information that is only available in the context (e.g. whichever measure length happens to be in effect).

E.g. I am currently writing code to manage rhythms and separate out or melt together e.g. chords, markups or articulations in Frescobaldi, it would break badly when a duration after 'R' (or s or \skip or whatever) suddenly is not a duration anymore! And there would not be a way to fix it.
