I *think* you're mixing things here. I *could* switch from the
*Cinnamon* desktop environment to MATE or XFCE (or Gnome or KDE or
whatever), but not from Debian to Ubuntu or similar. That would actually
be changing to a new distro.
I *do* have installed Ubuntu MATE on a secondary partition, just to
check that Frescobaldi 3 runs from Git without issues. But I'm not
actually interested in completely switching to another distribution and
setting everything up once more, just for this issue ...
