Well, yeah, it's difficult because our current basio_io isn't basic 
enough to support binary contents. (Or better said: it supports binary 
contents, but uses escaping of double-quotes and back-slashes - which is 
presumably equally slow as hex encoding.

Thus using a binary roster format means changing or replacing basic_io.
