Btw, we do have a modified version of BLT8.0-unoff that is required
for use with Windows, and fixes a few configure-time things for Unix, too.
(But it doesn't surprise me there were a few nits...)

"really, really flaky" relative to what, BLT 2.3?  I looked at the
BLT8.0-unoff source code in those places, and I don't remember having
that problem.  I'm sure I didn't modify any C source code for Solaris 2.6,
and I don't see why those lines would be problematic on Irix 6.3. You
did compile with GCC, right?

Keep in mind that the ffcall library is GPLed.  That means all applications
linked in that environment will also be GPLed...
