OK, so there is the first problem. I had no clue that HDF5 had to be
built before R, so the R I built is not HDF5 equipt, and I'm taking back
the RPMs until I understand the HDF5 problem. I suppose you guessed
that, from the tone of your comment, I'm just admitting it.
Just so I can understand, though, tell me this. When does the "those
were built with different compilers" problem come into play? We learned
this last weekend, or at least MM did, that if you upgrade egcs, then
you have to recompile swarm. If I upgraded just gcc to 2.8.1, but left
egcs alone, could I expect my swarm stuff to be OK since swarm is
compiled with egcs?
But if I upgrade gcc, how many other programs will quit working because
I don't have the same old gcc anymore?
And If I do upgrade gcc to 2.8.1, will people who still have the 2.7.xx
gcc be able to use my HDF5 rpms?
And If I upgrade gcc to 2.8.1, can I compile kernels without it? Last I
checked, the 2.7.xx gcc was the only officially approved compiler.??
You may think I'm kidding by asking these questions, but I'm not. I
have an enquiring mind.
