What do you get from:

   $ nm main.o

It isn't a question of the account you use, it's a question of what
prefix the binaries are configured.  For Linux-based systems, I
usually install the last stable RPM release in /usr, and from-source
build of a bleeding edge version somewhere else like /usr/local
(actually I use /packages).
