HDRI is no magic GI solution, besides that there is a
limited set of lightprobes available, everybody tends
to use the same ones from Paul Debevec's site. So I'm
sure when I get that done, everybody is going to be
sick of seeing yet another uffizi/RNL/beach/etc
render. My Blender IBL program could be used to create
new ones with terragen though (would be nice to know
it actually was used for once).
But in any case, don't expect better looking pictures
from it. The sunsky background is calculated in HDR,
that is, it uses color values greater than 1, but that
doesn't mean it looks better. You would get the same
result if the sky was a HDR image.

btw, you are implementing a skinshader? I was actually
working on the same thing (and others), but I'll leave
that to you then. It's probably better to use this
dev-list to announce these sort of things if you are
sure you are going to implement something, just in
case somebody else is doing the same thing.
Of course I could say the same, but for me it was just
a test to see if I could (can) do it, I only really
announce something when I know I am able to do what I
want, meaning I actually already coded it.
