That all options started out hidden must indeed have been the result
of me doing something strange.  After rechecking, this particular bug
did not re-occur.  But all the other bugs I mentioned are still there.
In addition to help-at-pt-display-when-idle, another example of a very
strange looking "new style" [Value v] button can be seen by doing
`M-x customize-group initialization' and looking at initial-scratch-message.
