In abstract terms there's not much in it.  In practical terms there's
safety in numbers.  So if you want contributions to the documentation,
then it's likely to be better to use a widely used format than a
homegrown format.  Similarly, if you use a widely used format, then
it's likely that there'll be tools to translate to other formats and
so on.

If it's close enough to plain text (and the one that Tom's constructed
probably is) then you can get away with it.  But it's a bit like
building yet another scheme implementation---there's a strong chance
that a couple of years down the line, you'll have scripts that don't
quite work with anything, and (if you're lucky) an implementation
which almost compiles.
