No luck:

/home/greg/repository/blessed/lmi[0]$nano .git/description
/home/greg/repository/blessed/lmi[0]$cat .git/description
Let me illustrate... creates life insurance illustrations
/home/greg/repository/blessed/lmi[0]$git status
# On branch master
nothing to commit (working directory clean)
/home/greg/repository/blessed/lmi[0]$git push
Everything up-to-date
/home/greg/repository/blessed/lmi[0]$

Apparently this requires administrator intervention:

  https://github.com/klaussilveira/gitlist/issues/178
| That's not how you get a description file into it. You log on
| to the *server* and edit <reponame>/.git/description

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3214871/git-push-git-description-file
| You could store a description in the root of your repo, and
| then symlink .git/description to that in each repo

I'll ask them to take care of it because this looks unprofessional:
  http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/lmi.git
| Unnamed repository; edit this file 'description' to name the repository.
