thanks!!  It's clear now why they are not found.

May I ask; would it be possible/wise to look for the locales in 
$(datadir)/locale instead of $(prefix)/$DATADIR/locale?  If yes, will this be 
part of the next version?  If yes I won't change the synaptic rpm that I 
distribute at the moment.
