Ok, I managed to get the whole thing working. Here are the reason for
the problems I observed:

1. Initially I used the wrong version of mkisofs to create iso images -
sorry for that!

2. The -dummy option of cdrecord-prodvd and dvdrecord is not as "dummy" as
one would think it is. I did my first tests with a DVD-R, but was using
the wrong the mkisofs command to generate the image. The subsequent tests
I made with a DVD+R - still using the wrong mkisofs. However, although I
used the -dummy option the drive _did_ write to the DVD+R before it failed
because of the wrong ISO format. As a consequence all further test with
the correct ISO images failed as well. I ignored the warning about the
possibility of the media being prerecorded because I consistently used the
-dummy option (one also gets warnings about incorrect start sectors when
burning CDRs...) As far as I can tell the -dummy option is working fine
for DVD-R but not for the DVD+R media. I verified this by accidentally
sacrificing yet another DVD+R. Anybody to confirm this behavior?

In the description of the "driver" option the man page states the
following:

... There are two special driver entries in the list: cdr_simul and
dvd_simul. These driver entries are designed to make timing tests at any
speed or timing tests for drives that do not support the -dummy
option. ...

Seemingly there exist drives that do not support the -dummy option.
However, I am not sure whether the problem I observed is caused by the
firmware of the drive or by the device driver not providing me an error
message in case the enabling of -dummy mode fails.

Thanks to everybody for their support!

Dominique
