It is used to specify the format in which the file will be written. I pretty much always do a ``:set ff=unix'' when I open a file that claims to be in DOS format. A ``:w'' changes it to UNIX format.
To be somewhat on-topic, I'm running vim 6.2.407, built from the darcs tree at davidb.org. I should do a new build.
